Kids are learning everywhere, all the time.

We couldn’t stop them from learning if we tried.

When we choose to divest from the compulsory schoo

When we choose to divest from the compulsory school model, we do so for many reasons.

Not the least of which is with the knowledge that the traditional educational model does not serve every child well, nor is it biologically respectful. Just a couple reasons why:

1. All brains learn differently. There’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning.
2. Grouping kids by chronological age doesn’t make sense, given point 1.
3. Children need to move and relate in order to learn. Sitting for 8 hours isn’t it.
4. Black and brown children are at risk for having their very developmentally and culturally appropriate behaviors pathologized, leading to negative outcomes just existing in the trad school setting.
5. Kids need agency and autonomy in order to best tap their working memory and support them in recall. And they’re going to remember better when they are interested or excited about what’s being taught.

We could go on and on. But the moral here is: no, we don’t recreate school at home.

“Homeschool” is the language we have to use in order to be in good standing with the state. That’s it.

For us, learning happens in community and in THE community. There aren’t any desks. Kids have agency over how they spend their time. Grown ups do, too. We learn from and with each other, all day everyday, as we move and play and laugh and create.

Disclaimer: there are tons of “homeschool” models and many do look more like school. Just speaking to where we’ve landed.

If your goal is to raise kids who think critically and creatively, that’s got to start in the context of their relationships with the grown ups around them.

Are your kids comfortable questioning you? Are YOU comfortable with your kids questioning you?

(Easier said than done, right?)

Consider the alternative. Consider what they’re being taught to conform to. Maybe obedience isn’t best.

Weather in Cleveland changed our plans yesterday.

Weather in Cleveland changed our plans yesterday. Our Flying Squad adventures relocated from a local park to a library where we spent the afternoons making Zines about everything from sports to “horror.”

Every one turned out so beautifully different. Every child helped one another, with spelling, with design, with ideas. And at the end of the afternoon, every child chose to make sure every other child received a copy of their Zine.

So, within a traditional, compulsory model, what were they learning? Reading. Writing. Art.

But more importantly: collaboration, problem solving, emotion regulation, patience, self-esteem, fine motor skills. Mixed age and intergenerational connection.

Learning like this can be a beautiful thing.

One of our LOOP crew’s favorite rituals is Maker Monday.

Created and led by the kids, everyone is invited to bring in anything they’ve worked on over the course of the week and share it with the group.

Week after week, we get to see incredible LEGO builds, STEM stuff, puzzles, stories, and pieces of art.

This has blossomed into choosing to devote time on Mondays to holding an active, collective Maker Space. This week, creating little people out of household items.

When kids are allowed the freedom to explore, lead, play, and imagine, they come up with some pretty cool 💩

When you give kids time, support, and the freedom to explore, you'd be surprised what they can come up with. A few of ours decided to start their own "Art Club," when we gather. They don't make the same art, but they sit together and spend time creating whatever their minds see. As a former creator, it's exactly the type of "art class" I wish I had growing up.

This week’s Flying Squad gathering included an incredible Scavenger Hunt designed and facilitated by 10yo founding member Sahara.

She brought supplies she created for the group then broke everyone into teams and we spent the afternoon exploring Nelson’s Ledges in search of all sorts of surprises.

This is what can happen when kids take control of their learning. They are creative, thoughtful, and organized. They are confident in tapping into their natural leadership skills.

And when they’re in a mixed-age setting, they model all of this for the others around them, lighting the way.

And when they are raised in community, they find ways to care for their community. Dreaming up shared games and adventures.
